Green Spring
A guide to Green Springs Park in Enterprise, Volusia County, FL — a rare green-hued sulfur spring and 19th-century health-resort site. Free admission, trails and overlooks, the history, and why you look but don't swim here.
Almost every spring in this guide runs the same crystal blue-green from clear, cold water over white limestone. Green Spring is the exception — it's genuinely, unmistakably green, an emerald sulfur spring tucked into a Volusia County nature park in Enterprise. The color comes from its mineral, sulfurous water, and it's the reason 19th-century promoters once sold this spot as a healing resort.
Set your expectations before you come: this is a look-don't-swim spring. You can't get in the water (it's a sulfur spring, closed to swimming), and there's no fishing. What you get instead is a short, scenic walk to a strikingly colored spring with a real history, plus trails down to Lake Monroe — a quiet, free, half-hour stop, not a swimming day.

The Spring
Green Spring is a sulfur spring with an unusual green hue from its mineral content — distinct from the blue of Florida's limestone springs. Its run flows toward Lake Monroe. The spot was first settled in 1841 by Cornelius Taylor, who built a hotel on a nearby shell mound and marketed the spring's "restorative" waters as a health spa — one of Florida's early spring-tourism resorts. The surrounding area is a notable archaeological site.

- Birding & nature — A quiet ecological park; good for a slow wildlife walk.

Tips for Families
- No swimming — set expectations first. This is a look-and-learn spring, not a swim stop. Pair it with a swimmable spring (Gemini, De Leon, or Blue Spring) for the in-water part of the day.
- It's free and quick. Budget 30–45 minutes; it's a scenic and historical stop, not an all-day destination.
- Great add-on to a Sanford day. Combine the spring walk with historic downtown Sanford and Lake Monroe.
- Bring bug spray. It's a shady, low-lying nature park near the lake.
