Every swim-with-manatees tour in Crystal River does the same core thing: a licensed captain takes you onto Kings Bay at dawn, an in-water guide briefs you on the federal rules, and you float in a wetsuit while wild manatees decide whether to come and look at you. The differences are in the boat size, the price, the departure time, and whether photos are included. This guide lines those up so you can book the right one.
Prices below are the operators' published rates as of September 2026 for the 2026–27 season. Operators change prices between seasons and some only quote by phone; treat the numbers as a starting point and confirm at booking. We are not paid by any operator listed here.

How to choose
Cheapest reliable option: Bird's Underwater. The public tour is the lowest published price in town and the operator has run manatee trips longer than anyone else. Three daily departures give you a fallback if the 6 a.m. slot is gone.
Best for photos: Fun 2 Dive. The in-water guide shoots throughout the trip and the images are available to buy afterwards, which beats fumbling a phone in a wetsuit. The semi-private option at six people is the sweet spot for a family.
Best for a mixed group: Manatee Swim Center. The $50 observer fare lets a grandparent or a nervous swimmer ride along and watch from the boat without paying the swimmer rate.
Best for a full private boat: Fun 2 Dive's $425 semi-private boat for six is the lowest published private price; Bird's at $449 and Crystal River Watersports from $450 are within a few dollars. Split six ways, a private boat costs about the same as public fares and gives you the captain's full attention.
Staying at the Plantation: Book the Adventure Center. The docks are on the resort property, so you walk from your room to the boat and back to a hot shower.
When to go
The refuge's official manatee season runs November 15 through March 31. The animals move on water temperature, not the calendar: they push into the springs when the Gulf drops below about 68°F and drift back out on warm days to feed. That means:
- December through February is peak. The morning after a cold front is the best single day you can pick.
- The first departure of the day sees the calmest water and the most manatees before boat traffic builds.
- January and February weekends sell out two to four weeks ahead. Weekday mornings are easier and often better.
- November and March have fewer animals and fewer people. You will still see manatees on most trips.
- Summer tours run and manatees are present in smaller numbers year-round, but you are booking a bay snorkel with a chance of manatees, not a gathering.

What every tour includes, and what it does not
Included by every operator listed: a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain, an in-water guide, the federally required "Manatee Manners" briefing, and a wetsuit (5mm at most operators, which you will want in January), mask, and snorkel.
Usually not included: photos (Fun 2 Dive sells them; others may), gratuity for the captain and guide, and anything to eat beyond a snack. Bring a towel and a dry change of clothes; January air is 50 to 60°F when you climb out.
Fins are provided by some operators and banned by the refuge in the sanctuary areas; your guide will tell you.
The rules, briefly
Kings Bay is the only place in the United States where in-water interaction with wild manatees is legal, and it stays legal because operators and guests follow the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rules:
- Float still. Let the manatee come to you.
- One open hand, only if the animal initiates contact. No grabbing, no two hands, no riding.
- Do not chase, corner, or separate a cow from a calf.
- Do not enter the roped sanctuaries.
- No flash photography underwater.
Violations are federal offenses. Every operator will end the trip for a guest who ignores the briefing.
What to Bring
- Towel and dry clothes for after
- Reef-safe mineral sunscreen, applied before the wetsuit
- A waterproof camera or phone case (no flash)
- Cash for gratuity
- Motion-sickness tablets if you need them; the bay is calm but the boat idles for long stretches
What Not to Bring
- Fins, unless your operator issues them
- Snorkels with a strobe or light
- Anything you cannot afford to drop in 20 feet of water
- Expectations of touching a manatee; most guests do not, and that is fine
Getting there
Crystal River is about 75 minutes north of Tampa on U.S. 19 and about 90 minutes northwest of Orlando via the Florida Turnpike and S.R. 44. Most operators are on Kings Bay Drive or NE 3rd Street, a few minutes apart. Dawn departures mean a pre-dawn drive from either city or a night in town; the springs near Tampa and springs near Orlando hubs list the surrounding springs if you are making a weekend of it.
